IELTS course types and test formats
There are two different IELTS modules: the IELTS Academic module and the IELTS General Training module. Both tests assess your English language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking. A special scale is used for scoring the IELTS exam. The exam is scored from 0 to 9. Higher IELTS scores reflect a higher level of understanding and ability to communicate in English.
Listening, reading and writing tests are conducted on one day, and the speaking test can be conducted a week before or a week after other tests. Usually the IELTS exam lasts for 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Listening
The listening section lasts for 30 minutes. The person taking the exam has to listen to four recordings and answer the questions. The recordings feature a native English speaker. The evaluators of this task will try to assess the ability of the candidate to understand main ideas and detailed factual information while listening to the recording.
Reading
The reading section takes 60 minutes. There are 40 questions in the reading part of the exam. These include reading for gist, reading for main ideas, reading for detail, skimming, understanding logical argument and recognising writers' opinions, attitudes and purpose.
The texts are taken from various magazines, books and newspapers. Topics are of general interest. The texts can belong to a variety of different styles, such as narrative, descriptive or discursive texts.
Writing
The time allocated for the writing task is also 60 minutes. The writing section consists of two parts. In the first part, you are asked to describe and explain a graph, table or chart in your own words. You may be asked to describe and explain data, describe the stages of a process, how something works or describe an object or event. The second part is to write an essay, expressing your opinion, supporting it with arguments and describing a problem.
Speaking
11–14 minutes are allocated for speaking. The speaking section consists of three parts. In the first part, the examiner will ask you general questions about a range of familiar topics, such as home, family, work, studies and interests. This part lasts between four and five minutes.
In the second part, you will be given a card which asks you to talk about a particular topic. You will have one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. After that, the examiner will ask one or two questions on the same topic.
In the third part, you will be asked further questions about the topic from the second part, but these questions will be more abstract. This part of the test lasts four to five minutes.
